Jim was born and raised in Butte, Montana. He was educated by the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Irish Christian Brothers. He left Butte to attend Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington where he earned teacher certification and a degree in Philosophy. Jim moved to Alaska in 1969. Jim spent 33 years in public education as a teacher and principal. He was also a federal program director and superintendent. Upon retiring from public education he became an administrator at SEAS school in 2003. Jim is married to Anita and has two children, four step daughters and 11 grandchildren.
